Sanchez joined Chelsea in 2023 Ryan Pierse/Getty ImagesAug. 31, 2026 4:56 pm EDT Updated Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with Como to send goalkeeper Robert Sanchez to the Serie A club on a season-long loan.Chelsea have been looking to find Sanchez a new club since deciding to sign Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa for £7.5m on Thursday to replace him as first choice.As The Athletic reported on Friday, Chelsea were always going to keep Belgium international Mike Penders to be the main competition for Martinez.Sanchez has made 104 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Brighton and Hove Albion for £25million in 2023. He was part of the team which won the FIFA Club World Cup last year, starting in the side which beat Paris Saint Germain 3-0 in the final.

But the Spain international has had periods out of the first team in every campaign, mostly due to a lack of form.Sanchez was at fault for at least one of the goals in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Fulham in their opening Premier League game of the season last week. He was then left out of their next two matches.Martinez started Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, while Sanchez was not included in the matchday squad.While new manager Xabi Alonso never confirmed that Sanchez was the established No 1, he did admit he was happy with Sanchez and Penders as his main two options earlier this month, with 23-year-old Teddy Sharman-Lowe to act as third choice.Sanchez will join up with former Chelsea teammate Trevoh Chalobah, who joined the Serie A side for an initial £25m in August.
