Two crane operators were injured after a crane collapsed and caught fire during cargo-handling operations at Mumbai Port on Sunday evening (August 30, 2026), according to officials.The incident occurred around 7.30 p.m. at the BPS location in Mumbai Port, where the Barbados-flagged vessel Vienna was berthed.Officials said cargo weighing around 140 metric tonnes was being lifted from the vessel using two cranes operated by Barkat Company when a strap attached to the cargo being handled by one of the cranes became unbalanced and came off.As a result, the load shifted onto the second crane, causing it to be lifted off the ground. The crane’s front telescopic boom subsequently struck the vessel.The impact and resulting friction caused the crane to catch fire, officials said. The Mumbai Port fire brigade reached the spot and extinguished the blaze soon after the incident.Crane operator Ranjit Singh and another operator, Nishant Singh, both associated with Barkat Crane, suffered injuries in the incident. They were taken to St. George Hospital in Mumbai for treatment.The circumstances leading to the failure of the lifting operation, including how the cargo strap became unbalanced and detached, are being examined.An investigation into the incident is underway.
