The French president hailed the deal as a “choice of European sovereignty”
French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday called on other European countries to follow Sweden in purchasing French-made frigates to boost European sovereignty.
Sweden on Monday signed a €4.3 billion deal for four frigates produced by French manufacturer Naval Group, hailed by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson as an investment in Swedish naval security for “decades to come”.
The contract was signed by Pierre-Eric Pommelet, CEO of Naval Group, and Mikael Granholm, director of the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).
The French group was chosen for its ability to make a “quick delivery”, the government said in May, adding that it was also a “proven system” with air defence capabilities.
