Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Three Patagonian maras, rodents closely related to capybaras and guinea pigs, were safely recovered after escaping from a Netherlands zoo.

The Avifauna bird park in Alphen aan den Rijn said the three large rodents escaped Sunday from a temporary holding area where they had been placed while awaiting transfer to another zoo.

Police were summoned to assist with the search and one of the maras was found on zoo grounds.

A second mara was found in the garden of a home near the facility.

The third mara was found inside the zoo Monday morning.
