A low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal will bring heavy rain to several southern districts till September 2 morning, the IMD said on Monday.Very heavy rainfall is also likely in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts till Tuesday morning due to the weather system, the IMD said.The low-pressure area is likely to move west-northwestwards and cause heavy rain in Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Purulia and South 24 Parganas districts till Wednesday, it said.Heavy rainfall is also likely in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar till September 4, the Met department said.The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the sea along and off the West Bengal and Odisha coasts and over the north Bay of Bengal till Tuesday morning due to the weather system.Several parts of south Bengal received heavy rain due to the low-pressure area, with the seaside tourist town of Digha recording the highest rainfall in the state at 74 mm in the 24 hours till 8.30 am on Monday, it said.Sagar Island recorded 65 mm, Haldia 61 mm and Suri 33 mm of rainfall during the period, according to IMD data.Published on August 31, 2026
