Ankara has reacted negatively to military cooperation between Greece and Israel
Athens and Tel Aviv signed an agreement on Monday establishing the “Achilles Shield”, a €3.1 billion air-defence umbrella expected to be completed within 35 months.
The “Achilles Shield” will combine existing Greek capabilities, such as Patriot air-defence systems and unmanned platforms, with Israeli systems covering different ranges, including Rafael’s SPYDER.
The goal is to create a unified, multi-layered air-defence and ballistic-missile defence network capable of countering different types of threats.
According to the Greek defence ministry, the Israeli systems should be interoperable with Greece’s existing defence assets, including the Belharra frigates, Rafale and F-16 Viper fighter aircraft, and Patriot batteries.
