The Jets cut their roster down to 53 on a day when general manager Darren Mougey continued wheeling and dealing. He might not be done just yet.But for now, the player he added (center Jordan Meredith) will be part of a 53-man roster that both Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn believe is good enough to take a real step forward after a terrible 2025 campaign.Here’s a position-by-position look at the initial roster, which is subject to change as the Jets add more players via the waiver wire and/or trades:Quarterback (2)Geno Smith
Cade KlubnikKlubnik ultimately “won” the backup job behind Smith, though Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook didn’t exactly provide stiff competition. It’s still possible (if not likely) that the Jets add another quarterback here — who it is will determine if Klubnik maintains his hold on the No. 2 job. I’d be concerned if the Jets actually had to turn to Klubnik early this season in the event that Smith was injured, both for Klubnik’s development and for the short-term performance of the offense. But I do think he’s shown enough to believe in him as a long-term No. 2 option.Some notable quarterbacks released on and before Sunday include Will Levis, Josh Johnson, Kyle Trask and Jake Browning. Others could be available via trade — particularly from the handful of teams that kept four quarterbacks on their active roster.Levis is the most intriguing of that group because of his physical and athletic traits, though I’m not sure how much more he does for the offense than Klubnik considering Levis’s turnover tendencies. Levis is subject to waivers though, is only 27 and would cost around $2 million.
