Four suspected members of an armed group were killed in a gunfight with the Meghalaya Police in the East Garo Hills district on Sunday. Two pistols, along with live and used rounds of ammunition, were recovered from them, said the East Garo Hills Police.It alleged that the men were going towards Songsak town to abduct officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited for ransom.A team comprising personnel from the anti-terror squad, the East Garo Hills District Police and Songsak Police Station was deployed to intercept them.At a checkpoint, when the vehicle carrying the four men was signalled to stop, they opened fire on the team, alleged the police. This prompted the security personnel to retaliate, it added. The police said that the four men were taken to hospital, where they were declared brought dead.They were identified as Allason Marak, a resident of Mendima in North Garo Hills, and Sustom Rabha, Kalam Ali and Bobidul Islam, all residents of Goalpara in Assam.Marak was allegedly involved in a firing incident in Damra, in which a businessperson was killed, the police said.
