A first information report was registered against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly promoting enmity between groups and deliberately outraging religious feelings, PTI reported on Sunday. This came a day after Gandhi demanded that an FIR be filed against those who carried out a “purification” ritual at a ground in Uttarakhand, where Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had held a rally earlier this month. The police in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani said that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act was also invoked against Gandhi. The complaint was filed by a member of the Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas, the organisation that had performed the ritual at Ramlila Ground in Haldwani. The complainant said that he is a member of the Valmiki community and was present during the “ritual and cleanliness drive” held on August 11, along with other members of the Scheduled Caste community, PTI reported. He alleged that Gandhi in his press conference on Saturday had portrayed those involved in the ritual as practising “untouchability” and being “anti-Dalit”, adding that the Congress leader’s remarks had hurt the sentiments of the community. He claimed that the event had “no connection” with Kharge’s caste, the news agency reported. On Saturday, Gandhi said that the incident in Haldwani was “an act of untouchability” against Kharge, disguised as “purification”. Untouchability is a punishable offence under the Constitution, he said. “It is a crime,” he added.Kharge had raised the matter in the Rajya Sabha on August 13, and demanded that those who performed the ritual be arrested. Union minister JP Nadda had said that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party “does not subscribe to such activities” and that the party would investigate the matter. The Congress’ Uttarakhand unit has alleged that the Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas is associated with the BJP.However, the Hindutva party has denied links to the group and claimed that slogans shouted at Kharge’s rally had offended those who believed in Sanatana Dharma.Sanatana Dharma is a term some people use as a synonym for Hinduism.Edited by Nachiket Deuskar.
