Borussia Dortmund playmaker Giannis Konstantelias will miss “several months” after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the Bundesliga club confirmed Sunday.
The 23-year-old Greek, widely regarded as one of the country’s most promising players of his generation, suffered the injury during Dortmund’s 2-0 victory over Hamburg in the Bundesliga opener Saturday.
Konstantelias, who joined Dortmund from Greek club PAOK in the offseason for a reported 30 million euros ($35 million), scored on his debut before going down with the knee injury. He was replaced by Marcel Sabitzer in the 54th minute.
Dortmund said tests revealed damage to Konstantelias’ ACL and that he would be sidelined for an extended period.
