SpaceX (SPCX) plans to launch its first Nvidia (NVDA)-powered AI satellites in the fourth quarter of 2027. Elon Musk said running AI workloads in space could one day cost less than using large data centers on Earth. He also believes it could have a smaller impact on the environment.
Musk expects the orbital data center network to reach “significant scale” in 2028. That could give SpaceX another way to add computing power as AI demand grows.
SpaceX Plans Nvidia-Powered AI Satellites
SpaceX plans to use Nvidia technology to power its AI systems in orbit. Nvidia CFO Colette Kress said its Vera Rubin system is now in full production, with shipments going to SpaceX as well as Oracle (ORCL) and Amazon (AMZN).
Nvidia has also disclosed ownership of 122.8 million SpaceX shares. Evercore ISI noted that Nvidia is both a major SpaceX supplier and a shareholder.
