Apple iPhone 17 Pro: will the foldable iPhone come with a Pencil?Getty ImagesIt’s just a matter of days before the next big Apple special event — read this for the full schedule. Along with the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, there will be a foldable iPhone. But a potential accessory is unlikely to appear, it seems. ForbesApple iPhone 18 Pro Release Timeline: New Date Enters The ScheduleBy David PhelanApple Foldable iPhone Event Expectations And AccessoriesAccording to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, an all-new stylus was tested by Apple. “The prototype Pencil is stubbier than iPad versions, to align with the unique height of the device. It also was designed to magnetically attach to the side of the phone for both storage and charging, similar to how the other Pencils work,” Gurman claimed. Why The Foldable iPhone Apple Pencil Won’t Launch YetThis is a new product that hasn’t been leaked before, so it’s interesting. However, it seems unlikely that it will appear alongside the foldable iPhone (considered by some to be called the iPhone Ultra, but read this for why I think that’s wrong). “Let me start off by being extremely direct: It seems unlikely that Apple will actually launch this accessory when it rolls out the foldable iPhone next month,” Gurman insisted. The chief reason is that storing the new stubbier Pencil would be tricky if you want to open the folding phone but not use the accessory. What’s more, the foldable phone’s sensitive display, something which has been the case for foldables for years, could mean that “unsightly marks,” as Gurman described it, could be left on the screen. Display Size And Apple’s History With StylusesThe new foldable is predicted to have a display similar in size when it’s unfolded to the original iPad mini, so a Pencil could have been a useful addition. Gurman also noted that Steve Jobs famously said that nobody wants a stylus for a phone. That’s true, but it’s something I put to Tim Cook back when the first iPad Pro, with optional Apple Pencil, was released, in 2015.“Well, we didn’t really do a stylus, we did a Pencil. The traditional stylus is fat, it has really bad latency so you’re sketching here and it’s filling the line in somewhere behind. You can’t sketch with something like that, you need something that mimics the look and feel of the pencil itself or you’re not going to replace it. We’re not trying to replace finger touch, we’re complementing it with the Pencil,” he told me.So, I believe that Apple could have tested a new accessory, but I’m sure Gurman is right, and we won’t see it alongside the foldable iPhone on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at the Apple keynote.
