A man has died after crashing his car into a tree during a police chase.The driver, 41, was in a grey Audi and did not have his lights on in High Street South in Dunstable, Bedfordshire when police were alerted around 10.30pm on Saturday. He failed to stop for police and a pursuit ensued as the vehicle made off on the A5183 towards Markyate. Just minutes later the car veered off the road and smashed into a tree, police said.No other vehicles were involved in the collision.The officers carried out first aid and were later assisted by emergency services.However he could not be saved and was pronounced dead shortly before 11:30pm. In line with standard protocols, Bedfordshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) who have since launched an investigation.A cordon was in place on the A5 between the Kensworth Turn (northbound) and Caddington (southbound) whilst emergency services responded.The road has since reopened.
