Shooting to fame in Coronation Street as the feisty Karen MacDonald, the award-winning star, 48, boasts an impressive CV full of smash-hit shows, including Vigil.‌Suranne returns to the police drama set in the remote Arctic research station tonight where she reprises her role as the ballsy DCI Amy Silva. No doubt Amy will be up to her eyes in all sorts as she teams up with Rose Leslie's DI Kirsten Longacre to tackle dangerous investigations.‌Off-screen, Suranne's life is a lot less dramatic as she enjoys spending time with her family while championing other actresses with her own production company. Here we take a look...‌Family lifeSuranne has a 10-year-old son with her husband of four years, magazine editor and scriptwriter Laurence Akers. The couple met in 2013 at the wedding of Suranne's close friend and Coronation Street co-star, Sally Lindsay, and got married the following year in Islington.Suranne and Laurence, who now live in North London, first met while attending Sally's wedding and immediately hit it off - although Laurence was initially set up with Countdown queen, Carol Vorderman! Speaking to the Mirror, Suranne revealed that she asked her old Corrie boss to set her up with something at the wedding.‌She recalled: "He said, 'I do have a friend, he's over there', Laurence was sitting next to Carol Vorderman." Laurence then added: "My mates were trying to pair me off with Carol Vorderman."Revealing more about their first meeting, she continued: "Later I was dancing with the actor Peter Eccleston, the partner of Antony Cotton from Coronation Street. Laurence came over and said, 'Can I cut in?' But he took Peter instead of me and was flinging him around the dance floor. I thought, 'Oh, he's very funny'. We swapped numbers."Two years later, in 2015, the couple tied the knot in a private ceremony at Islington Town Hall‌Losing her parentsWhen Suranne gave birth to her son in 2016, she sadly lost her mother Jenny, following a heartbreaking battle with dementia.Suranne credits her mum for inspiring her to follow her dreams and pursue a career in acting, telling us: Mirror: "There are different icons [in my life]. I had a lot of women in my family, my mum and her sisters, who were always very strong women in different ways, good Northern women."She continued: "My mum was very shy but with a real strength of character underneath, which I'm hoping to share with my son." The actress, who has been candid about the devastating impact her mum's death has had on her, added: "She's not with us anymore, but I think of her often. I had a really good relationship with my mother."‌In an interview with the Guardian, Suranne opened up about having to 'rewire' her whole relationship with her mum as she sadly stopped recognising her. She explained: "There’s still a connection, only it’s very different. And meanwhile your whole being is saying: but this is my mum. There was a good five years of that. And then you lose them for real and you have to grieve again."Content cannot be displayed without consentFive years later, the star sadly lost her dad to Covid and revealed that she grieved him in secret. Posting a touching tribute to both her parents on Instagram, she wrote: “Happy birthday mum forever on a beach in Cornwall with dad mum passed away 4 and a half years ago and my father sadly passed away this January after fighting Covid and the affect it had on his body.”‌"We are still coming to terms with it all but I know they are together and today I want to celebrate them both."Strange phobiaSomething fans may not know about Suranne is that she has a phobia many haven't heard of. Carpophobia is a fear of wrists, with the star telling us she believes her Catholic upbringing may have led to the unusual aversion.“I hate wrists,” Suranne revealed. “Growing up as a Catholic girl, seeing Jesus on the cross with the stigmata has made me not like wrists. You can see people’s veins.”‌Own production companyIn 2017 Suranne and her husband set up their own production company, Teamakers Productions Ltd. The BAFTA-winning actress said she enjoys creating roles for women who have often been overlooked in life.Praising the work of Michaela Coel, who wrote and starred in the BBC hit series, I May Destroy You. She said: “I know I want to work with daring people and I want to push things.“I May Destroy You is amazing and the half-hours are ­becoming really popular because they’re stories that are just crammed at you and you can binge them if you want to.
