Michael Carrick hailed Kobbie Mainoo’s performance as “immense” after Manchester United came from behind to comfortably beat Ipswich Town and secure their first victory of the season.The United head coach handed Mainoo his first start of the season in midfield alongside Youri Tielemans after he came off the bench in last weekend’s defeat by Hull City.Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick, Bryan Mbeumo got his first of the season and a Jacob Greaves own goal saw United beat Ipswich 5-2 at Old Trafford.But Mainoo played a pivotal role in the centre of the pitch on and off the ball, which helped United dictate the game, particularly in the second half.“I thought he was pretty much all-around very, very good for a first start back,” Carrick said, pointing to the fact Mainoo played a limited amount of minutes in pre-season following his time at the World Cup with England.“You know, we kind of managed him a little bit, and we’ve got good midfielders, so it’s that trying to make the best of the combinations.“But I thought Kobbie, I understand Bruno will get a lot of credit today, and he deserves that as well, but I thought Kobbie was immense in the middle of the pitch for us and underpinned the performance of the team.”United have spent £150million in this transfer window acquiring Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba in a midfield revamp.They are interested in signing a left-back while Joshua Zirkzee could potentially head to Fiorentina on loan with an option to be made permanent, which would require them to possibly bring in a back-up striker before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.“It’s always difficult to say, to be honest, when there’s so little time left,” the United head coach said when asked if he expects any further business.“I think the situation that we’re in, I think the business that we’ve managed to do, I’m pleased with.“I think we’re a better group, a better squad, potentially a better team, you know. Adding Marcus (Rashford) into that feels like a new signing.“So, in that respect, we’re quite happy. We’re always open to if there’s something else to be able to add, so I wouldn’t shut that down, but as it stands, we’ll have to wait and see.”
