New Delhi: In the last 72 hours, Uttar Pradesh's State Disaster Response Force and local police have recovered 13 bodies so far from the Gandak river in the state's Kushinagar and Maharajganj districts following the recent flash floods in Nepal. While Maharajganj directly shares an international border with Nepal, Kushinagar is close to Maharajganj.While four bodies were recovered from Gandak in Maharajganj, the remaining nine were recovered from the same river in Kushinagar. The Gandak, known as Narayani river in Nepal, flows from Nepal before joining the river Ganga.Sources in UP Police said nine bodies were recovered by SDRF while local police recovered two bodies from both the districts."The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been informed about the recovered bodies," a source said.The local administration is also in touch with its counterpart in Nepal to ascertain the identity of the recovered bodies in India. The rising water level in the Narayani-Gandak river following heavy rainfall in Nepal is a cause of concern for the villagers in Maharajganj district.According to a report, the surge in Nepal's Trishuli river is flowing downstream through the Narayani and entering Gandak, leading to a sharp increase in water discharge from the Valmikinagar Gandak barrage.
