Leftwingers from Jean-Luc Mélenchon to Raphaël Glucksmann are already in the running
Olivier Faure, the leader of the French socialists, announced he will run for the presidency in April 2027, joining a heavily-congested field of candidates on the left.
The Socialist Party leader announced his decision on Sunday evening via French television channel TF1.
“I want to build a more just France,” he said. He mentioned that his Vietnamese mother became French through marriage, that he has always fought against racism, and that he is “obsessed” with blocking Marine Le Pen, the far-right leader of the National Rally, from power.
At the Socialist Party’s gathering in Blois, central France, on Saturday, he pledged to revive the country’s environmental agenda, including by creating an EU fund to invest in environmental protection, climate adaptation and disaster prevention. He also called for an increase in the minimum wage and higher taxes on the wealthy.
