The meeting kicks off high-stakes talks testing whether the bloc can find common ground on trade, energy and conflict. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faces what analysts are calling a major test of his economic diplomacy skills.
He will press G20 counterparts to shrink trade imbalances, boost growth and sever business ties to Iran. He will also need to calm worries about rising U.S. debt and bond yields, according to Reuters.
Differences among member nations are simmering ahead of the gathering. Josh Lipsky, chair of international economics at the Atlantic Council think tank, told AFP that the combination of tensions “creates the broader feeling of, could this group fracture?”
