Justin Setterfield/Getty ImagesAug. 30, 2026 Updated 10:32 am EDTHamburg are close to an agreement to sign Arsenal’s Fabio Vieira on a permanent deal.Vieira, 26, spent last season on loan with the Bundesliga club and will return to Germany for a fee of around €10m (£8.5m; $11.6m).Vieira signed for Arsenal in 2022, but has not made a Premier League appearance for the club since the 2023-24 season. He spent the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Porto, before moving to Hamburg on the final day of last summer’s transfer window, becoming a fan favourite and one of the team’s most important players.While his original loan deal did include an option to make the move permanent for €20m, Hamburg chose not to activate it, opting instead to renegotiate a fee once the player had made clear that his preference was to return full-time.
Vieira is yet to travel to Germany, but will undertake a medical once a full agreement is reached, before completing his transfer.Vieira was essential to Hamburg last season. Luka Vuskovic, another loanee, took most of the headlines, but in their first season back in the Bundesliga after seven years away, it was the Portuguese who provided the team’s most telling moments of attacking class.While their summer has been productive, with Vieira about to become HSV’s fifth signing of the window, he will be every bit as important as he was a year ago.And while €10m is a paltry fee by Premier League standards, this is a significant investment for Hamburg and represents their biggest signing in a decade.
