BEIJING — A total of 546 people, including 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, remain missing after a devastating mudslide struck the Chinese side of the Nepal-China border, while the death toll has risen to 16, state media reported Sunday.The mudslide struck Gyirong Port on Wednesday in the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, according to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency.The latest figures were compiled after authorities from foreign affairs, public security, culture and tourism, and emergency management agencies jointly searched and cross-checked information on those unaccounted for.Among the missing foreign nationals are 104 Nepalese and 49 Indians. Authorities also listed 33 Latvians, 18 Americans, 15 Britons, six Canadians and six Australians.Four South Africans are missing, along with three nationals each from Malaysia, Germany and Russia; two each from Ireland, Estonia, France, the Netherlands and New Zealand; and one each from Kazakhstan, Finland, Lithuania, Portugal, Ukraine, Spain and Hungary.Chinese authorities have notified the embassies and consulates of the countries whose citizens remain unaccounted for.The disaster comes amid catastrophic flooding and landslides across the Himalayan region.In neighboring Nepal, the death toll from devastating floods has climbed to 734, with nearly 2,500 people still missing, according to official figures and local media.
