(Yonhap) Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds, thunder and lightning is forecast across most of South Korea through Monday. The central west coast is expected to bear the brunt of the downpours.Rain was already falling in southern parts of the country Sunday, where heavy rain warnings were in effect as of 5 p.m., according to the Korea Meteorological Administration. The rain will spread across most of the country by Monday, hitting hardest in southern Gyeonggi Province, southwestern Gangwon Province, the central Chungcheong region and North Jeolla Province.South Chungcheong Province and the cities of Daejeon and Sejong are expected to receive 80-150 millimeters of rain through Tuesday — totals could climb past 250 millimeters along the coast and 200 millimeters inland. North Chungcheong Province could also see up to 200 millimeters.Southern Gyeonggi is expected to get 50-100 millimeters, with certain areas topping 150. Seoul, Incheon, northern Gyeonggi and Gangwon Province are in line for 30-80 millimeters, though mountainous parts of southern Gangwon could get more than 120.In the greater Seoul area, the heaviest rain is expected between the predawn hours and Monday morning.The rain should end in southern regions and on Jeju Island by Monday night but will linger over central parts of the country into Tuesday morning.The weather agency warned of possible damage from the downpours, saying rainfall will vary sharply from one area to the next with strong bursts alternating with lulls.The rain will do little to cool the southern half of the country, where heat advisories remain in place. The heat index there and on Jeju is expected to reach around 33 degrees Celsius in the coming days.
