The Kolkata Police has registered a first information report against West Bengal’s former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly violating the Calcutta High Court order regarding the Trinamool Congress’s student wing foundation day event, reported The Hindu on Saturday.The case was registered on Friday after Mamata Banerjee’s supporters allegedly blocked both flanks of Cathedral Road, where the event was held, disrupted traffic and continued the programme beyond the permitted time, reported The Indian Express.On Tuesday, the High Court allowed both factions of the Trinamool Congress to hold the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad’s foundation event, specifying that movement of vehicles should not be stopped along one flank of the road, reported PTI.Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya allowed the Mamata Banerjee-led faction to hold the event on Cathedral Road, while the Ritabrata Banerjee-led rebel group was granted permission for Rani Rashmoni Avenue. A maximum of 1,500 persons were to be allowed in the events, supposed to be held between noon and 3 pm on Friday.The FIR against Mamata Banerjee was registered on a complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Apu Baidya of Hastings Police Station.It alleged that the former chief minister had “entered into a criminal conspiracy” with members of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad. She provoked her supporters, which resulted in the crowd pushing aside the barricades, clashing with police personnel “deployed for maintaining law and order, creating a chaotic situation and obstructing the vehicular movement of one flank of Cathedral Road”.Along with Mamata Banerjee, the FIR also named organisers of the foundation day event.They were booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy, using force against a government worker to prevent them from doing their job, and causing hurt to another by acting rashly or negligently.During the rally on Friday, Mamata Banerjee had alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal had turned the state police into a “monstrous entity”, reported The Indian Express.“I do not recognise this police force,” said the former chief minister. “The police force I worked with was humane, not inhuman. They helped people. There may have been a couple of isolated incidents, but I have seen police personnel stand their ground, suffer injuries and shed blood. They did not run bulldozers over people, fire tear gas or bullets indiscriminately.”Edited by Sneha.
