Rivers State, due to politics, always swings from very good to very bad. Now, the state that was noted for getting its annual budgets passed in matter of hours some years and matter of days in other years, now has no budget for many months or years.
The budget dropped on the table of Martins Amaewhule, speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, on July 10, 2026, may not have been opened one bit. No public hearing has been scheduled, no government official has been invited to defend anything, and it has not been passed.
Worse, the present House of Assembly has not passed one budget since it came and may not pass any as their days are heading to May 2027 when they would vacate.
The reason is that the 32-member House moved for impeachment of Gov Sim Fubara on October 23,2023, just five months after the governor in office. Many did not understand what they said were the offences of a governor who was taking instructions from his godfather. Many said Fubara had not even found space to steal or to misrule. The House has continued to edit and update the list of Fubara’s offences, most of them these days being actions he took in the heat of war. The initial offences seem to have dissolved long ago because many did not see the offences in the first place because the real reason for the impeachment move was rather and apparently known by market women: sharing of the state’s treasury.
