Goals by Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa gave Newcastle United their first win under new coach Matthias Jaissle and condemned hosts Tottenham Hotspur to their second defeat in as many games to start the Premier League season. After a goalless first half, the game sprang to life just past the hour left when Elanga scored his second goal in two games, controlling a header from Amar Dedic and finishing on the turn.Ten minutes later, Wisa cleverly hooked in a knockdown to secure Jaissle’s maiden victory. Roberto De Zerbi, in the home dugout, however, is yet to pick up as much as a point this season, in a worrying start following a huge outlay in the transfer market. Here, our reporters break down the key talking points.Elanga and Wissa find form under JaissleWhen a new head coach or manager arrives at a club, there are fresh opportunities and new starts for players who had struggled under the previous regime. Already, it is evident that Elanga and Wissa have benefitted most from Jaissle succeeding Eddie Howe this summer. Elanga failed to score a Premier League goal last season, despite attempting 17 shots across 1,313 minutes of game time. In two matches and 158 minutes of this one, he already has two goals from four attempts. Both of them were taken brilliantly, too. After finishing a swift counter-attack against Liverpool clinically last Sunday, he sprinted away from his former Newcastle team-mate Sandro Tonali, took a touch, spun 360 degrees and then dug a left-footed shot across Antonin Kinsky and in off the far post.Wissa celebrates with Elanga (Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)Ten minutes later, Wissa scored his first Premier League goal of the calendar year. The DR Congo international was superb against Liverpool; driving forward from a No 10 position, he was involved in everything positive Newcastle did, though his finishing let him down. But Wissa was back as the No 9 against Spurs, due to Will Osula’s absence because of a foot injury and, with his only shot on target, he scored superbly. Nick Woltemade, who had just been brought on in another positive Jaissle substitution, nodded down Lewis Hall’s corner for the former Brentford man to loft the ball over his own head and into the net. After failing to score in any of his previous 17 appearances in all club competitions, Wissa looked overjoyed as he celebrated. What’s more, Newcastle kept their first clean sheet since March 14, having conceded in each of their past 11 outings. So much is new about Newcastle now and, so far, the early signs are very promising.Chris WaughMarmoush a bright spot in defeatSpurs looked better in attack against Newcastle than they did in the season-opening 3-0 defeat to Brentford a week earlier, and that was largely down to the presence of new signing Omar Marmoush. The Egypt international was thrust straight into the starting XI — ahead of Dominic Solanke, while Richarlison was not named in the matchday squad of 20 — after only arriving on a season-long loan from Manchester City in the past few days.Marmoush looked good on his Spurs debut despite defeat (Richard Heathcote/Getty Images)Marmoush was anonymous for the first 15 minutes and even slipped at one stage when trying to win the ball. He suddenly sparked into life when he received a pass between the lines from Jan Paul van Hecke and released Mathys Tel down the left wing.
