Las Leonas are world champions again.
Argentina’s women’s national field hockey team defeated the home team, the Netherlands, 3-1 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Saturday, completing a dramatic comeback against the reigning champions and winning their third World Cup.
The victory came against the toughest possible opponent. The Netherlands had beaten Argentina in the 2022 final and entered Saturday’s match as the world’s dominant women’s hockey team and the reigning Olympic champions.
Argentina had already survived a demanding route to the final. They topped their first-round pool undefeated, drawing 1-1 with the United States before beating Germany 3-2 and Scotland 2-0.
They then defeated Spain 3-0 and drew 0-0 with Belgium in the second round before overcoming Australia 1-0 in the semifinals.
