A new study has found that corruption and misconduct by police officers have significantly eroded public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and discouraged citizens from sharing security intelligence with the authorities amid worsening insecurity across the country.
The research, published in IRE Journals and conducted by a journalist, James Adakole Ojo, surveyed 256 Nigerians to examine public trust and perceptions of the police and how such attitudes influence citizens’ willingness to provide security information to the force.
The study identified corruption and police misconduct as major factors undermining public confidence in the NPF.
According to the findings, 84.8% of respondents said corruption and misconduct reduce their confidence in the police, while 85.2% said they do not believe the force treats citizens fairly and without bias.
