Dharwad district president of JD(S) Gururaj Hunasimarad urged the State government to declare Dharwad district as drought-hit and provide relief to farmers affected by deficient rainfall.Addressing a press conference in Dharwad on Saturday, Mr. Hunasimarad said the government had declared 101 taluks drought-hit, but none of the taluks in Dharwad district had been included in the list.He alleged that the decision had been taken without a proper assessment of the ground situation in North Karnataka. Drought conditions had emerged in several districts of the region, but the government was yet to respond adequately to the situation, he said.Mr. Hunasimarad claimed that nearly 85% of crops in Dharwad district had dried up following the failure of the southwest monsoon. The shortage of rainfall had also begun to affect rabi crops, further aggravating difficulties faced by farmers.He urged the government to conduct an immediate field-level assessment and include the district in the drought-hit list. The government should also provide crop-loss compensation and other assistance to affected farmers, he said.He appealed to Ministers and legislators from the district to set aside political differences and prevail upon the government to provide relief to farmers.
