The 29-year-old woman was traveling to Singapore to begin a master's degree, had been persuaded by a Chinese acquaintance to visit Thailand before that, and arrived at a Bangkok hotel on the evening of Aug. 23, Nation Thailand reported.
She booked a car through someone she believed was a tour guide but had never met in person before.
The Bangkok Post reported that the vehicle arrived with just the driver but later stopped to pick up three other men. The woman realized she had been tricked and tried to resist, but the men overpowered her, took her phone and tied her hands with plastic zip ties.
The group appeared to be driving toward Mae Sot in Tak Province near the Myanmar border, apparently intending to take her across the border.
The woman escaped as the vehicle passed a police checkpoint in Kamphaeng Phet Province, where she screamed for help and alerted officers to her plight.
