Athlos, the women’s-only track league founded in 2024, has announced the cancellation of its annual New York meet in October. The first international Athlos meet is scheduled to go ahead as planned in London, England, on September 18 and will be broadcast by the BBC, the national broadcaster, but the event at Icahn Stadium, Manhattan, on October 2 has been postponed.“Our goal is that, starting in the 2027 season, Athlos events will move to be aligned with the global athletics calendar,” Team Athlos said in a statement published on X.Athletes competing in London include Olympic champions Keely Hodgkinson (800m), Tara Davis-Woodhall (long jump), Gabby Thomas (200m), plus 100m hurdles world-record holder Masai Russell, and Sha’Carri Richardson, the 100m world champion in 2023.“We are putting everything into London,” the league said in its statement, adding that the StoneX Stadium in Barnet, north London, is nearly sold-out to its 10,500 capacity, and it remained “fully committed to building an even stronger platform for women’s track and field.”Founded by Alexis Ohanian, one of the co-creators of Reddit who also holds a 10 per cent stake in Chelsea women, the first Athlos event in 2024 attracted three million viewers. The league has had success by drawing big names, paying large sums of prize money on time, and gifting the victors Tiffany & Co crowns. Last year it hosted a long jump competition in Times Square, the day before the main event at Icahn stadium. From six events in 2024 — all on the track, ranging from 100m to 1,500m — long jump was added last year, and the same seven disciplines will be contested in London, the longest of which is a mile.“Athlos was founded to put athletes first, and that means building a schedule that lets the world’s best female athletes compete healthy and at their peak,” it stated on Friday.“When Athlos launched, we created a new opportunity at the end of the traditional season. It has become clear that Athlos’s long-term home is within the main athletics calendar. Moving our event schedule in 2027 is the right call for our athletes and for the future of the series.”The challenges of existing as an end-of-season meet have been compounded by the introduction of the World Athletics Ultimate Championships, for which the inaugural competition takes place in Budapest, Hungary, in mid-September. Athletes there are all guaranteed to take home a cut of the $10million prize pot, with individual winners paid $150,000 each as part of a new-look championships that will be staged each even year.Ohanian, in a video posted to X, said that this was his decision. “We built ATHLOS at the very end of the season to give athletes one more go at peak performance,” he explained.
