Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman will hold their next meeting on September 2, officials said, as the two sides move to step up contacts over the divided island’s future.
The leaders have agreed to meet weekly, with additional sessions if circumstances require, according to officials in Nicosia. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had called for the next five-party meeting on Cyprus to produce concrete results.
The UN has taken on the task of recording areas of convergence reached in previous rounds of negotiations. Guterres’ personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, is also expected to visit Cyprus in early September.
Officials in Nicosia say progress on the Cyprus problem at the leaders’ level is necessary, but stressed that Turkey’s position remains the decisive factor in any advance toward a settlement.
