Eli Lilly $LLY announced Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Mounjaro (tirzepatide) to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes who are at high risk for those events.

Mounjaro, a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, is the first drug in its class to carry this cardiovascular indication, the company said. The drug had previously received approval to help control blood sugar, used alongside diet and exercise, in patients aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes.
