In response to a new wave of U.S. economic pressure, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic has called on countries around the world to refrain from enforcing Washington’s unilateral sanctions against Iran.
On Friday, August 28, the ministry described the U.S. “Operation Economic Exclusion” as “state terrorism” in a statement, claiming that Washington’s new sanctions violate the United Nations Charter and the principles of international law.
In its statement, the Islamic Republic accused the U.S. of leveraging the dollar’s role in the international financial system to pressure other nations into severing economic ties with Iran. Tehran’s Foreign Ministry categorized this action as a violation of national sovereignty and the principle of sovereign equality among states.
The ministry also cited UN General Assembly resolutions regarding non-interference in the internal affairs of states and the principles of friendly relations among nations, stating that governments should neither recognize the effects of unilateral U.S. sanctions nor assist in their implementation.
In another part of the statement, Tehran characterized the new U.S. sanctions as a continuation of an “economic war” against the Islamic Republic, asserting that these measures aim to impose hardship and economic harm on the Iranian people. The Iranian Foreign Ministry further criticized the United Nations and its member states for what it termed “appeasement” toward U.S. and Israeli actions.
