The album features a litany of handpicked artists who’ve performed and recorded their own rendition of the songs on Turnstile’s NEVER ENOUGH. Turnstile selected quite an eclectic range of acts for VERSIONS, most of which seem to represent the many genres the band experimented with on the original LP. However, some of the acts that Turnstile featured are out of left field, like the Maryland death metal outfit Dying Fetus.The Featured Acts On Turnstile’s NEVER ENOUGH: VERSIONSWith 22 unique versions of the original 14 track album, Turnstile’s near 2 hour long VERSIONS LP features several acts including Elton John, Slayyyter, Oklou Hayley Williams, Angel Du$t, Blood Orange, Alex G, Faye Webster, Julien Baker, Panda Bear, and Dying Fetus. Each artist brings an entirely original spin to Turnstile’s material, and listening to the LP front to back will offer a rollercoaster of vibes changes; Panda Bear’s breakbeat dreamy aura heard on “MAGIC MAN” slowly sinks into to the fiery pits of hell as Dying Fetus fade into a blast beat barrage on “BIRDS.” This dichotomy is largely what makes VERSIONS fun and not feel like a completely unnecessary special edition of the band’s beloved LP. In fact, many of the unique renditions showcase terrific performances – Faye Webster’s “I CARE" and Mustafa and Julien Baker’s “TIME IS HAPPENING” were particular standouts. However, there are quite a few remix versions of Turnstile’s songs on this LP, but they more often than not feel like unnecessary bloat compared to the more intentional performance driven covers on this album. Are ALL-Star VERSIONS Albums Becoming A Trend?It was a bit surprising to see Turnstile put together this special edition for their acclaimed LP, as not many young acts in the rock space have done such a move. In recent memory, the last band to release a notable All-Star studded compilation album of one of their own acclaimed works was Metallica. In 2021, the band celebrated 30 years of the Black Album and they released The Metallica Blacklist – an LP featuring over four hours worth covers from various artists. It’s possible Metallica’s anniversary LP inspired the likes of Turnstile to do something similar with VERSIONS. It’s certainly a unique and more substantive twist on a special edition re-release, as most re-releases come across as filler for an artists’ discography and are just unwarranted.
