Tamil Nadu government on Friday held a meeting with various stakeholders to improve the performance and capacity of Chennai airport and set the ball rolling for the proposed Terminal 5.This comes after the State dropped the ₹27,400-crore greenfield airport project at Parandur.The TN Industries Department on Friday held a meeting with stakeholders including officials from the airport, airlines and industry associations, to discuss measures to improve the existing airport and strengthen its infrastructure. The meeting also focused on the proposed Terminal 5 expansion on the western side of the airport.A key discussion point was to expedite the proposed elevated road connecting the NH32–Tambaram-Maduravoyal corridor with Terminal 5. The National Highways Authority of India and the Water Resources Department have been asked to speed up the process.“The main discussion was the new elevated approach road from the proposed new terminal (T5) to the Chennai bypass road; operational performance and capacity enhancement of Chennai airport; and recommendations to enhance user experience at Chennai airport,” Industries Secretary S. Vijayakumar told businessline.For Terminal 5, the discussions covered its design, the elevated approach road connecting it to the bypass, a flood study and preparation of a comprehensive development plan.Airport sources said a no-objection certificate from the Water Resources Department would be required for constructing the elevated corridor along the Adyar river bund.Other sources noted that some of the participants wanted more flights to be operated at the airport.The government has also sought a clear deadline and construction schedule for completing Terminal 3 and commissioning the T3 plaza. The Airports Authority of India has been asked to expedite the work, said Vijaykumar.airport operationsOn airport operations and capacity enhancement, the government has decided to conduct monthly reviews to monitor progress.Improving passenger experience is another key focus. The government plans to examine areas such as food and beverage services, lounges and the entry and exit experience. A consultant has also been asked to review these aspects and make recommendations.The government is also looking at ways to increase air cargo capacity by encouraging more passenger flights that can carry cargo.The meeting and the discussions indicate that the State government intends to enhance Chennai airport’s capacity and efficiency while the search for a new greenfield airport site also continues.Published on August 28, 2026
