Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The U.S. military said Thursday that it shot down three drones operated by drug cartels at the U.S.-Mexico border using a laser.
Three unmanned aircraft systems were shot down late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning with "Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser system," according to U.S. Northern Command, which oversees military operations in North America. The group responsible is the Joint Task Force -- Southern Border, a press release said.
The Northern Command didn't say where the drones were shot down or which cartels the drones allegedly belonged to.
When asked whose airspace the drones were over when they were disabled, a USNORTHCOM spokesperson told CBS News: "The shots were taken in coordination with all partners operating along the border. Due to operational security reasons and ongoing counter cartel and counter drone operations, we do not have additional details to provide at this time."
