LAS VEGAS — Sometimes scores can be misleading. The San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders’ tie at 12 at the two-minute warning in Thursday night’s preseason finale was not.Eddy Piñeiro, who made a 59-yard attempt earlier, kicked a 51-yard field goal for the lead and a 54-yarder as insurance, giving him six field goals in the 18-12 win, but the 49ers were already content to walk away from the boring affair with only one more injured 53-man-roster player than they had coming in: rookie cornerback Ephesians Prysock, who left in the first quarter with a sprained shoulder. There wasn’t much to be gained in the preseason finale, as only a couple of the 49ers’ potential starters played against the Raiders.Keion White used a swim move for a sack and was all over the field in a good test, as the Raiders played their offensive starters. Fourth-round rookie Carver Willis, who might be the opening-day starter at left guard by default, was up and down like the rest of the offensive line. The 49ers ran for 91 yards on 15 carries in the first half, but the line did get stuffed twice in short yardage, and the passing game never got going, as Mac Jones and Adrian Martinez combined for 137 yards passing (only 42 yards in the first half).Niners coach Kyle Shanahan smiled when asked whether any players stood out to him.“Um, I mean, yeah, there are a few guys,” he said. “I have no problem with praising people, but people in this league get paid a lot of money to read everything we say and evaluate decisions over these next three days based off of practice squads and depth charts and stuff. So I got to be pretty careful with that.”Top Plays from 49ers @ RaidersWith the preseason complete, we’ve tag-teamed the final projection for the 49ers’ roster ahead of Sunday’s 3 p.m. PT cutdown deadline, with Vic Tafur handling the offense and Matt Barrows the defense.Notes: The projection includes three players going to injured reserve with a designation to return (and mentions others who could be IR candidates). Only two players can be given that designation before the cutdown deadline, which could mean additional transactions Monday. Rookies in italics.Offense (26)Quarterback (2): Brock Purdy, Mac JonesInjured reserve: Kurtis RourkeCut: Adrian MartinezRourke has three broken ribs, which actually gives the 49ers some flexibility, as they would have had to carry three quarterbacks on the roster to keep him, the potential backup in 2027 if Jones leaves to pursue a starting job next offseason. Putting him on short-term IR would rule him out for at least four weeks without taking up a roster spot.Jones has been a little erratic this preseason and training camp, but he was great last season, winning five of eight starts, and a case could be made the 49ers have the best quarterbacks group in the NFL.Barrows’ counterpoint: This scenario would leave the 49ers with only two quarterbacks available early on, unless they got Martinez on the practice squad and elevate him for games. That’s certainly possible, though they can elevate only two players per week and might need to use those spots elsewhere. Also, they can elevate Martinez only three times before he would have to be signed to the 53-man roster to be eligible for another game.Running back (4): Christian McCaffrey, Kaelon Black, Jordan James, Kyle Juszczyk (fullback)PUP: Isaac GuerendoCut: Sincere McCormick, Khalil HerbertThe top three running backs all missed time during training camp, but they’re all ramping up and look very good. James had a 20-yard catch-and-run on a screen and a 17-yard bulldozing run Thursday night. Black, who had a 14-yard run, returned to camp before James and seems to have a firm hold on the No. 2 job, thanks to how hard he hits the hole, good vision and underrated hands.49ers' talented running backs finally assembleMatt BarrowsWide receiver (6): Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, De’Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson, Jordan Watkins, Jacob CowingInjured reserve: Christian KirkCut: KhaDarel Hodge, Will Pauling, Wesley Grimes, Malik Turner, Trenton IrwinCowing was firmly on the bubble until that touchdown on a punt return last week, and he should send some steaks to the Los Angeles Chargers’ punter. If JK Scott made any kind of effort to tackle Cowing, it would have been a ho-hum 30-yard return for an injury-plagued receiver. Cowing is now battling a groin injury.Kirk’s calf injury on the first day of camp lingered, and if he goes on IR, that would give Cowing and Watkins — who had four catches for 64 yards and three carries for 19 yards Thursday night — at least another four weeks to make an impression. Robinson seems to have moved past those two because of Purdy’s trust in the vet.Tight end (3): George Kittle, Jake Tonges, Luke FarrellCut: Brayden Willis, Khalil Dinkins, Hayden RucciWorst-case scenario, Kittle will be back from his Achilles injury for Week 2 and a three-game homestand. Best case, he’ll give the Los Angeles Rams something to worry about in Australia. The 49ers won’t rush him because they believe in Tonges — he scored the winning touchdown in the season opener in Seattle last year, and Shanahan said he has improved from last season. Willis turned some heads in early August, as he always does, but ran out of steam again.Offensive line (11): LT Trent Williams, LG Carver Willis, C Jake Brendel, RG Dominick Puni, RT Colton McKivitz, OT Austen Pleasants, G Robert Jones, G Connor Colby, OT Vederian Lowe, OT Enrique Cruz Jr., C Brett TothCut: Brandon Parker, Nick Zakelj, Drake Nugent, Isaac Alarcon, Doug Kramer Jr.Shanahan said after the game Willis is making a strong push to win the left guard job, and the 49ers hope to have that decided when they return to practice Monday.A quick tip of the cap to ninth-year vet Parker, who had a great day in one-on-ones in practice Tuesday and will likely clear waivers and be available for the 49ers’ practice squad again. He could even make the roster, as Lowe’s ankle injury is lingering a month later. Why keep 11 O-linemen? Several are dealing with injuries (including Puni with lingering concussion issues), and the 49ers — a contending team — have to stand firm with the decision to hold a spot for a raw fifth-round rookie (Cruz) who is a year or two away from being ready to play in a regular-season game.Barrows’ counterpoint: Lowe could begin the season on injured reserve, which would put Pleasants in the swing tackle role he had last year and free up another roster spot. Toth’s lingering concussion symptoms, meanwhile, create concern at backup center. If he can’t play in Australia — or make the 16-hour plane trip — the 49ers would have to think about having Nugent or Kramer in uniform in Week 1. Perhaps Nugent will land on the practice squad and get elevated against the Rams.Defense (24)Defensive line (9): DE Nick Bosa, DT Osa Odighizuwa, DT Alfred Collins, DE Romello Height, DE Keion White, DE Sam Okuayinonu, DT CJ West, DT Gracen Halton, DT James Thompson Jr.PUP: Mykel WilliamsCut: DT Sebastian Valdez, DT Bryson Eason, DT Evan Anderson, DE Ogbo Okoronkwo, DE Quinton Bell, DE Viliami Fehoko Jr., DE Jah JoynerThompson, an undrafted rookie, has arguably outplayed all the defensive linemen from this year’s rookie class and last year’s as well. He’s certainly been the healthiest. He, Eason and Valdez have been resilient since the spring, and the 49ers will try to get that group onto the active roster or practice squad. The team also could stand to stash a defensive end — Okoronkwo? — on the practice squad and elevate him for games early on while Williams rounds into form. Starting the season on PUP means Williams must miss the first four games, but he could rejoin practice after two weeks.Tafur’s counterpoint: I think the 49ers would be happy with any combination of Thompson, Eason and Valdez on the practice squad, which is why I think they’ll go with only eight D-linemen or with Okoronkwo as the ninth. Linebacker (6): Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, Jaden Dugger, Nick Martin, Garret Wallow, Luke GiffordCut: Tatum Bethune, Deion Jones, Larry Worth III, Jalen GrahamGifford or Bethune? Yes, Bethune played well as the backup middle linebacker last year while Gifford — who had a concussion in the spring and a hamstring issue in the summer — has largely been absent. Still, Gifford made the Pro Bowl last year as a special teamer, and coordinator Brant Boyer will likely go to bat for him as cutdown day approaches. Wallow, meanwhile, might have displaced Bethune, despite his interception in Las Vegas on Thursday night, as the backup middle linebacker. Not only will Dugger make the 53-man squad, but there’s a good chance he’ll start against the Rams on Sept. 10. He’s their best bet as the third linebacker — and tight end stopper — next to Warner and Greenlaw.Perhaps the 49ers will try to get newcomer Jones onto the practice squad as Greenlaw insurance. Greenlaw, after all, has started just nine games in the past two seasons. Worth, meanwhile, is a no-brainer practice squad candidate. He’s long (his 33 1/8-inch arms forced a high throw on Bethune’s pick Thursday), lean and versatile, just like Dugger.Tafur’s counterpoint: I wonder whether Wallow and Bethune will both make it. When asked after the game why Wallow wasn’t suited up, Shanahan referenced back spasms but added Wallow has had “a helluva camp.” Plus, I am not sure how soon they’ll plug Dugger in. He had a missed tackle and a QB pressure Thursday and is still pretty raw.Cornerback (5): Deommodore Lenoir, Renardo Green, Upton Stout, Jack Jones, Ephesians PrysockInjured reserve: Nate HobbsCut: Darrell Luter Jr., Eli Apple, Jakob RobinsonLuter has technically been the team’s No. 4 outside cornerback with Prysock in the No. 5 spot. Prysock left Thursday’s game with an AC joint (shoulder) sprain, and his status will likely hinge on the severity of that injury. If he’s not expected to miss much time, the 49ers would go with the big-bodied rookie over Luter, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. The hamstring injury Green suffered last week could also make this spot tricky.Meanwhile, Jones literally gets his hands on at least one pass per outing — including Thursday — and ought to be the first player off the bench if Green or Lenoir has to come out. Robinson is a nickel specialist who should be back on the practice squad.Safety (4): Ji’Ayir Brown, Marques Sigle, Malik Mustapha, Siran NealCut: Ashtyn Davis, Jalen Stroman, Patrick McMorrisMustapha appears close to returning from a hamstring strain suffered early in training camp. If there’s a hiccup, he could go on injured reserve, and Davis would likely make the 53-man roster.Special teams (3)PK Eddy Piñeiro, P Corliss Waitman, LS Jon WeeksThe battery of Piñeiro, Waitman and Weeks has been consistent throughout the summer, including a stellar performance from Piñeiro on Thursday. The only quibble is Piñeiro’s kickoff placement. Waitman could get tapped for that duty during the regular season, though Piñeiro handled all the kickoffs against the Raiders.
