Alberta’s iGaming market opening explained and what happened after July 13?

For years, PlayAlberta has been the only locally regulated online gambling option in the province. On July 13, Alberta moved toward a more open, Ontario-style model, allowing private operators to enter the market under provincial oversight. Alberta became Canada’s second open iGaming market after Ontario, with AGLC acting as regulator and the Alberta iGaming Corporation managing the commercial framework.

In my view, this is less about creating something entirely new and more about bringing existing activity into a safer, more transparent environment.

Alberta is smaller than Ontario, of course, but the opportunity is still significant. The province has a strong sports culture, and a grey-market segment that regulators clearly want to bring into the legal framework.
