Spending more on education does not always translate into better results.
That is one lesson buried in the latest EU education data, which shows that some of the bloc's biggest spenders are lagging behind more frugal neighbours when it comes to pupils' basic skills.
Norway is among the countries that spend the most generously on each student among the countries compared. Latvia spends far less.
Yet Latvian pupils perform far better than the Nordic country when basic skills are examined, according to the latest figures on European education budgets and outcomes.
