—The ruling: The Industrial Relations Court, Malawi’s specialist court for workplace disputes, found on 14 November 2025 that the Reserve Bank of Malawi could not unilaterally cut salaries that had already become contractual entitlements.

—The case: Matter IRC 803 of 2022 was brought by Clemence Chinkono, a former RBM director of administrative services. Deputy Chairperson Annie Zinenani Gumulira delivered the judgment.

—The cut: Chinkono’s monthly salary fell from MK12,046,436 (about US$6,900) to MK9,885,937 (about US$5,700), a reduction of about 18 percent, effective 30 December 2020.
