Procurement of summer moong in Madhya Pradesh touched a record high of 5.33 lakh tonnes this year. During summer 2025, about 3.93 lakh tonnes were procured in the state.According to Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Indian governement at the request of Madhya Pradesh government had initially approved procurement of 4.54 lakh tonnes of summer moong for the 2026 season. Subsequently, keeping farmers’ interest in mind, an additional 84,492 tonnes was approved and the additional approval did not impose any financial burden on the state government, according to an official statement.With this, the total approved quantity for procurement in MP stood at 5,39,072 tonnes. The procurement period has ended and the state recording purchase of 5.33 lakh tonnes of moong. The procurement operations, which was carried out through NAFED and NCCF, enabled farmers to receive a fair price for their produce at MSP, providing them direct beneficial benefit, the statement said.During summer 2025, against an approved quantity of 4,19,692 tonnes, MP had procured 3,93,123 tonnes. In Summer 2026, both the approved quantity and actual procurement increased. Chouhan said the improvement reflected greater support for farmers and increased confidence in the market.In the ongoing kharif 2026 cropping season, moong acreage stood at tad lower at 32.68 lakh hectares as of August 21, compared to last year’s 33.92 lh. Key producing states for the kharif season such as Rajasthan, Karnataka and Maharashtra have seen acreage trail last year’s levels on weak monsoon. Some states such as Telangana, Andhra, Uttar Pradesh and Chhatisgarh have registered an increase in area during the ongoing cropping season.In Karnataka, the harvest of moong has begun in parts of North Karnataka and the crop is seen lower due to drop in area and delayed monsoon and erratic rains affecting the yields. The Centre has announced MSP of ₹8,780 per quintal for the 2026 season.Published on August 28, 2026
