The political temperature in Kwara is rising ahead of the 2027 general elections, with former allies taking opposite positions, new alliances emerging and the two dominant camps already staking claims to the grassroots.
Arewa PUNCH reports that at the heart of the unfolding power play is Kwara Central, where the defection of Senator Saliu Mustapha from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party has opened a new chapter in his political relationship with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The senator’s exit has not only drawn a line between the two political figures but has also triggered a scramble for control of party structures, loyalty and influence in a district expected to host one of the state’s most closely watched contests in 2027.
On Wednesday, the APC moved quickly to send a message that Mustapha’s departure had not created a vacuum in its Kwara Central base.
Fifty-one ward chairmen in the district, alongside stakeholders from Gambari Ward I in Ilorin East Local Government Area, dismissed the senator’s defection and declared their continued loyalty to AbdulRazaq.
