Mumbai: Hindalco Industries is expanding its 800,000-tonne specialty alumina portfolio with a new flame-retardant product used in fire-safety applications across wires and cables, thermal insulation and electric vehicles. The Aditya Birla Group company commissioned a precipitated aluminium trihydrate facility at Belagavi in Karnataka on Thursday, with an initial capacity of 30,000 tonnes a year. The capacity can be doubled to 60,000 tonnes.The facility was set up with an investment of ₹400 crore, sources aware of the development said. Hindalco is also expected to commission several more specialty alumina facilities over the next few months, they said.These facilities are likely to have a combined annual capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes, taking Hindalco's total specialty alumina capacity to over 900,000 tonnes, the sources said.Also read: 45 Indian coal power plants have critical low fuel, government data showsHindalco Industries did not respond to an ET query until press time.The global specialty alumina market is currently estimated at more than 8 million tonnes, with Hindalco accounting for around 9-10% of the market, analysts said. The superfine precipitated aluminium trihydrate manufactured at Belagavi helps suppress flame propagation and smoke.
