Guinea’s coup leader enters presidential race, breaking promise to hand power to civilians
Mamadi Doumbouya, Guinea’s President has dismissed 173 military personnel for alleged desertion, in one of the broadest changes to the country’s armed forces since he seized power in a 2021 coup.

The dismissals include Michel Lamah, a military officer who was part of the Special Forces unit that helped bring Doumbouya to power and became a prominent figure in the overthrow of then President Alpha Condé.
The decision was announced in a presidential decree broadcast on state television on Monday, August 24. Gen Amara Camara, minister secretary general of the presidency, read the decree, which removed personnel from several branches of the armed forces.
