Lauren SamsFin editor, deputy editor AFR Magazine and fashion editorAug 28, 2026 – 5.00amAudrey is 15. She lives in Sydney and plays volleyball and rugby for her school, and most summer weekends she surfs. Last year she started making fake nails as a hobby; she gives them to friends as gifts. She used to get pocket money – $10 a week – but now she works at KFC and, flush with her weekly $100 in earnings, she goes shopping. She doesn’t shop online much – she doesn’t have a credit card and anyway, she prefers hanging out with her friends. They go to Cotton On and Supré, but her favourite store is Glassons. She has a White Fox hoodie but she doesn’t understand why the brand is so popular. She’s buying her formal dress soon, which is a “really big decision” and for that, she’ll look online at sites that I, an elder Millennial and the fashion editor for The Australian Financial Review, have never heard of – Peppermayo and Babyboo. When she buys her dress, she’ll post a pic of it on her year group’s Instagram page, run by two girls whose parents have chosen to override the government’s social media ban. That way everyone will know what she’s planning to wear and, if the system works, nobody else will turn up in the same thing.Subscribe to gift this articleGift 5 articles to anyone you choose each month when you subscribe.Subscribe nowAlready a subscriber?
