The Andhra Pradesh Teachers’ Federation (APTF) has demanded that in-service teachers be exempted from the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). The federation has also urged the government to conduct the examination in the offline mode with a pass mark of 40%, as part of the special TET notification issued for in-service teachers.Speaking at an emergency meeting of the APTF State sub-committee called on Thursday, federation’s president Chennupati Manjula and general secretary K. Basavalinga Rao said if the government failed to concede their demands by September 1, they would be forced to take the confrontation path and stage a protest in front of Vidya Bhavan from September 2 to 11.The APTF leaders said the Supreme Court had directed that teachers with several years of service and experience should once again qualify in the TET. They alleged that both the Central and State governments had failed to amend the relevant laws to protect in-service teachers.Instead of exempting senior in-service teachers from the TET, or issuing a special notification with a 40% pass mark and an offline examination, the government had issued the notification under the existing procedure, which the APTF leaders described as an attack on teachers.The leaders said their four main demands included exemption from TET for senior in-service teachers, as has been done in some other States, lowering of the qualifying percentage in the special TET to 40 %, subject-specific TET, i.e. teachers teaching Mathematics and Science (BS and PS) should be required to take the TET only in their respective subjects and considering the age of senior teachers, the TET should be conducted in offline mode.
