The Federal Government’s plan to gradually phase out non-technical programmes in polytechnics does not amount to an immediate cancellation of specific courses, according to a fresh explanation by the National Orientation Agency.
The NOA, in a statement shared on Thursday, said the policy was aimed at repositioning polytechnics towards their core technical mandate, with greater emphasis on applied sciences, engineering, technology, innovation and practical skills.
The agency said the announcement did not provide a definitive list of individual programmes that had been banned or immediately cancelled.
This means students currently enrolled in courses such as Business Administration, Accounting or Mass Communication have not been directed to immediately stop their studies based on the announcement.
Rather, the policy is expected to gradually reshape the programmes offered by polytechnics while placing greater emphasis on skills that can improve students’ employability and meet the demands of modern industries.
