SportHorse racingTerry Treichel, who rode over 1,200 winners, pleaded guilty to 32 rule breaches, including 30 which involved betting, when he was banned15:45, 27 Aug 2026A jockey who was disqualified for five years for betting offences is to return to the saddle under a new name.‌Terry Treichel has ridden over 1,200 winners in Australia and is a former champion in the Northern Territory where he was latterly based.‌In 2021 he pleaded guilty to 32 rule breaches, including 30 which involved betting for which he was subsequently banned. He was originally banned for eight years but served five. During an investigation into allegations of betting activity, Thoroughbred Racing Northern Territory stewards discovered Treichel had changed his name by deed poll to Daniel Jack Smith.‌He had betting accounts under the name Smith with a number of bookmakers through which he placed 27 bets on races he was riding in as Terry Treichel and 168 on other races.The 46-year-old pleaded guilty to all the charges issued against him while a licensed jockey between July 2019 and December 2020. These included falsely declaring in his licence application that his name was Terry Treichel when in fact he had changed his identity.Article continues belowThe inquiry notice said at the time: “This is a unique set of circumstances not seen before in Australian racing.
