Ruling party La Libertad Avanza (LLA) proved its negotiating power remains intact after the Lower House passed two economic bills that are key to President Javier Milei’s 2026 program. They now need Senate approval to become law.
During a session that lasted from Wednesday noon until midnight, deputies approved the government’s proposals to modify the Central Bank’s charter (144 votes in favor, 102 against and nine abstentions).
It also agreed to expand an existing law known as “Fiscal Innocence,” which created a regime to raise the threshold for tax evasion (139 in favor, 110 against and two abstentions).
The Central Bank’s charter reform would establish that the institution’s “sole responsibility” is preserving the value of the Argentine currency. It would strip it of its other current goals regarding economic and social equity and stability.
The main change Milei wants to introduce is to ban the Central Bank from financing government spending, in an effort to prevent future inflationary spikes.
