The as-yet-unnamed men, aged 19 and 28, allegedly attacked the 38-year-old British woman in the early hours of Tuesday morning in a hotel in the Laganas area of Zakynthos. Police said just three cases of rape had been reported by tourists in the last three months. But the head of the POEDIN hospital staff union claimed medical facilities had seen a huge spike in tourists being attacked, leading to a massive workload for staff. Michalis Giannakos said staff had to deal with eight rape cases in a three week period. He told local media that while the police were informed after the women were looked at by medical professionals, no cases were brought as the victims made no formal complaints and would not reveal their attackers' identity. The women, both aged 18, told police they met the man during a trip to Zakynthos and went to hospital for treatment and examination following the alleged attack. They also called their families about the matter. Upon learning of the alleged attack, the mother of one of the women flew out to Greece and tracked down the accused man at his place of work. Tensions quickly soared and the mother attacked him, forcing police to intervene. Officers are now looking into the allegations and the investigation is ongoing.
