A 72-year-old retired Fire and Rescue Services official was killed and nine others injured in an alleged drunk-driving incident near Aban Junction in Pathanamthitta town on Wednesday (August 26, 2026) evening.The deceased was identified as Abubacker, 72, a resident of Valanjuzhi in Pathanamthitta. The incident occurred around 6.45 p.m. when the driver lost control of the car and knocked down 10 pedestrians. The car also rammed two other cars, damaging both vehicles. The driver, identified as 48-year-old Jinu Babu, and his fellow traveller, 24-year-old Vishwajith, also sustained injuries in the accident. They were later taken into custody by the police.Migrant workers injuredFive migrant workers who sustained serious injuries have been referred to the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam. One of them is reported to be in a critical condition. The police have registered a case against the accused under non-bailable provisions, including those relating to drunken driving and culpable homicide.
